On June 27, Wang Ju, Secretary General of the International Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Association, delivered a keynote speech at the 2023 SPW Shanghai Platinum Week and China Platinum Group Metals Market Summit, and was interviewed by Shanghai Securities News during the conference. According to Wang Ju, the hydrogen energy and fuel cell vehicle industry may become a trillion-dollar blue ocean market with broad development prospects, driven by the "double carbon" target. Among them, platinum group metals are an indispensable element for the development of hydrogen energy industry.
Wang Ju said that platinum group metals are used as catalysts in the field of PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolysis of water for hydrogen production and fuel cells. By 2030, with the deployment of PEM electrolyzers, there will be an increasing demand for platinum, iridium and other platinum group metals. By 2030, with the development of the fuel cell vehicle sector on a large scale, there is a greater potential for growth in demand for platinum.
Wang Ju said, combined with the judgment of international authorities, it is expected that by 2030 the global direct investment in the hydrogen energy industry chain is expected to exceed $320 billion, and the demand for hydrogen energy will exceed more than 110 million tons.
For the development of hydrogen energy industry, Wang Ju believes that upstream hydrogen production is the source of hydrogen energy industry, and only when the problem of hydrogen source is solved, the industry can be developed continuously. At present, Europe is the global leader in green hydrogen investment. In the midstream storage and transportation link, gas hydrogen is the main one commonly used worldwide, and liquid hydrogen is more used in industrialization. At the downstream application end, hydrogen energy has a broad application prospect in power, industry, transportation and construction.
Wang Ju introduced that there are many different paths for hydrogen production, and the more mature one is alkaline electrolyzer. If platinum is used, the output of alkaline electrolyzer will be significantly increased.
In the field of transportation, Wang Ju introduced that by the end of 2022, the total number of fuel cell vehicles in major countries around the world reached 67,488, an increase of 36.1% year-on-year. The promotion and application of fuel cell vehicles in China has accelerated, with the cumulative promotion of fuel cell vehicles reaching nearly 13,000 units by the end of 2022.
Internationally, the commercialization of fuel cell commercial vehicles has just started, and the fuel cell commercial vehicle development plans of Europe and the United States and other countries are all focused on the long-term plan of 2030-2035, with emphasis on the development of heavy-duty trucks.
Wang Ju introduced, Toyota, Hyundai and other Asian manufacturers, Scania, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and other European manufacturers are actively carrying out research and development and demonstration in the field of fuel cell commercial vehicles. Among them, Toyota will vigorously promote the Mirai fuel cell power generation unit for foreign sales, and is expected to sell about 100,000 fuel cells to the public by 2030, and most of them are commercial vehicles.
