Wave energy to power subsea equipment raises oil and gas industry concerns

2023/6/28

Several energy companies from Europe and Asia recently visited a demonstration project using wave energy and subsea storage to power subsea equipment in the Orkney Islands, UK, developed by Mocean Energy UK, Verlume and other partners.

The £2 million subsea power renewable energy (RSP) project connects Mocean Energy's Blue X wave energy converter with a Halo underwater battery developed by Verlume.

The two technologies were deployed in Orkney waters earlier this year and the four-month test program is nearing completion. The project provides low carbon power and communications to infrastructure such as Baker Hughes' subsea control equipment and Transmark Subsea's underwater autonomous vehicles (AUVs).

The project aims to demonstrate how green technologies can be combined to provide reliable, low-carbon power and communications for subsea equipment.Verlume's Halo underwater battery provides reliable, uninterrupted power to overcome the intermittency of renewable energy sources, thereby ensuring energy security and ultimately facilitating the integration of green energy into future subsea projects.

These integrated technologies demonstrate the ability to decarbonize the oil and gas industry in the short term, said Cameron McNatt, managing director of Mocean Energy. As interest in the decarbonization route grows in the oil and gas industry, Mocean Energy plans to launch its first commercial product, a 20 kW Blue Star unit, in 2025. The device will power a range of subsea equipment, inspection and maintenance systems, and is currently seeking early adopters globally.

The demonstration project to power subsea equipment with wave energy and subsea energy storage is the third phase of the RSP project, which is supported by partners including UK energy companies Harbour Energy and Serica Energy. 2021 saw Mocean Energy's Blue X equipment at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney Scapa Flow test site in Orkney, generating electricity for the first time and collecting important data on the machine's relevant performance and operation.

JIN DUN CHEMICAL has built a special (meth) acrylic monomer manufacturing base in ZHEJIANG province. This makes sure the stable supply of HEMA, HPMA, HEA, HPA, GMA with high level quality. Our special acrylate monomers are widely used for thermosetting acrylic resins, crosslinkable emulsion polymers, acrylate anaerobic adhesive, two-component acrylate adhesive, solvent acrylate adhesive, emulsion acrylate adhesive, paper finishing agent and painting acrylic resins in adhesive. We have also developed the new and special (meth) acrylic monomers and derivatives. Such as the fluorinated acrylate monomers, It can be widely used in coating leveling agent, paints, inks, photosensitive resins, optical materials, fiber treatment, modifier for plastic or rubber field. We are aiming to be the top supplier in the field of special acrylate monomers, to share our rich experience with better quality products and professional service.
