BASF invests in lithium battery anode binder

BASF recently announced its plans to invest in the production of waterborne anode binders by retrofitting two existing dispersion plants located in Jiangsu and Guangdong provinces. The investment aims to support the lithium-ion battery industry. In addition to the existing product portfolio, the two plants will produce two types of innovative anode binder products. The project is expected to commence production in mid-2023.

Although anode binders account for a small proportion of the battery materials, they play a crucial role in the performance and stability of batteries. BASF's innovative binder products can effectively enhance battery capacity, improve cycling stability, and reduce charging time. This investment is in line with the growing demand in the lithium-ion battery market, particularly in the electric vehicle sector.

The binders produced by BASF are specifically designed to overcome application limitations of lithium-ion batteries, including performance at low temperatures. They are waterborne binders with high colloidal stability, excellent compatibility with auxiliary binders such as carboxymethyl cellulose, and outstanding processing and coating properties. Moreover, they exhibit excellent mechanical and electrochemical performance.
