Five years ago, when Erwang Duwen and his team came to Yancheng, Jiangsu to investigate the prospects of offshore wind power projects, they sincerely expressed: "Here, we see the enormous potential of China's development of offshore wind power

Nowadays, more than 100 "big windmills" are dancing in the blue sky and blue sea. The project has an annual power generation of about 1.4 billion kilowatt hours, which can meet the annual electricity demand of nearly 2 million residents. This is the first Sino European joint venture offshore wind power project built locally by the French Power Group, which Du Wen works for, in collaboration with a Chinese enterprise.

Five years later, when I come to Yancheng again, I am still optimistic about the development of China's offshore new energy. "On November 21, the 2023 China Europe Offshore New Energy Development Cooperation Forum opened in Yancheng. Du Wen, CEO of New Energy China at French Power Group, said in an interview with reporters that China has developed into the world's largest offshore new energy market, while Europe has technological and experience advantages, and the prospects for cooperation between the two sides are very broad.

The theme of this forum is "Marine Scenery Helps Low Carbon Development, China Europe Cooperation and Sharing a Green Future", attracting numerous representatives from the energy industry of China and Europe to discuss how to deepen cooperation in areas such as innovation and industrial development of marine new energy technology. The forum released the "2023 China Europe Maritime New Energy Development Cooperation Forum Yancheng Declaration" on site, calling on both sides to strengthen communication and dialogue, demand docking, and deepen industrial collaboration and project cooperation. A batch of Sino European cooperation industrial projects were also signed on site, with a total investment of nearly 29.5 billion yuan.

In recent years, China's offshore wind and photovoltaic industries have shown a rapid development trend. Data shows that as of the end of September this year, the cumulative installed capacity of offshore wind power in China reached 31.89 million kilowatts. According to State Grid Yancheng Power Supply Company, Yancheng, located on the coast of the Yellow Sea, is one of the areas with the best conditions for offshore wind power development and construction in China. Currently, the local installed capacity of new energy power generation is 13.62 million kilowatts.

Yancheng has a long coastline and a wide sea area, with unique 'scenic' resources. The exploitable capacity of offshore wind power is expected to exceed 30 million kilowatts, "said Hu Guirong, Director of the Development Department of State Grid Yancheng Power Supply Company. The resource advantage has attracted a large number of enterprises in wind power equipment, crystalline silicon photovoltaic and other fields to settle in Yancheng, and has also brought market opportunities for European related enterprises.

Du Wen introduced that French Power Group is planning to build a new offshore wind power project in Yancheng. We hope to leverage our technological advantages in offshore new energy development to help China better promote sustainable development. Although there is industry competition pressure, it can also drive us to continuously innovate and achieve 'sustainability' for our own development

Our business team is also conducting in-depth research here and is very interested in landing projects here, "Xu Zhonghua, Vice President of Research and Development for Asia at Total Energy, told reporters. Total Energy has rich experience in offshore oil project development and will fully leverage its strengths to seize the opportunities brought by China's offshore new energy development.

Roland Roysch, Director of the Innovation and Technology Center of the International Renewable Energy Agency, stated that both Europe and China attach great importance to the development of offshore new energy. Europe has deep technological accumulation in fields such as offshore wind power, offshore photovoltaic, and marine energy, as well as rich practical experience in regulatory construction and support policies. Strong cooperation between the two sides is expected to drive the rapid development of the global renewable energy industry.

Strengthening China Europe maritime new energy exchange and cooperation is of great significance for both sides to promote green and low-carbon energy transformation and fulfill the commitment of national independent contributions to addressing climate change. "An Fengquan, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department of the National Energy Administration, said that currently, China and Europe have formed a cooperation network covering more than 400 units in the energy field. Accelerating China Europe maritime new energy cooperation will surely achieve win-win development and benefit more people in the China Europe region.
