Industry experts: The automotive industry will become a new field of carbon fiber application

At the 29th China International Chemical Fiber Conference and 10th China Carbon Valley Carbon Fiber Industry Conference held on September 26-27, many attending experts believed that the automotive industry is a worthwhile application scenario for the carbon fiber industry that deserves in-depth exploration, and is expected to become a new field of carbon fiber application in the future.

The reporter learned that previously, carbon fiber was mostly used in specific fields such as wind power, aerospace, military, sports cars, etc. due to its high cost. Nowadays, with technological advancements, carbon fibers not only have improved their functionality and strength, but also have a certain decrease in cost.

Xu Lianghua, a professor at Beijing University of Chemical Technology, said that in recent years, the development situation of China's carbon fiber industry is very good. At present, three types of preparation systems, namely, viscose based, asphalt based and polyacrylonitrile based, have been formed; A precursor preparation technology system mainly composed of dimethyl sulfoxide method, with the participation of dimethylacetamide method and sodium thiocyanate method; A process system that combines wet spinning, dry wet spinning, and small and large tow processes; A complete product system with high-strength, high-strength medium modulus, high modulus, and high-strength high modulus.

With the continuous improvement of the performance of carbon fiber composite materials and the support of the "dual carbon" policy, more and more automobile manufacturers are also turning their attention to this.

Ye Fuheng, Deputy Director of the National Key Laboratory for High end Automotive Integration and Control at China FAW Research and Development Institute, believes that lightweight is one of the important ways to save energy and reduce emissions in automobiles. The advantages of carbon fiber composite materials are suitable for multiple scenarios such as automotive exterior components, body structures, and chassis structural components, making them an ideal material for deep lightweight automotive applications.

The right materials should be used in the right place, "said Ye Fuheng. The direction of multi material hybrid materials will promote the industrialization and large-scale application of carbon fiber composite materials in the automotive industry. In the new market where expected costs continue to decline and the industrial chain continues to improve, the proportion and usage of carbon fiber materials are expected to show an upward trend. At present, carbon fiber composite materials have been applied to models such as BMW 7 Series, BMW iX, Audi A8, NIO ES6, Chevrolet, etc.

Regarding how to achieve the large-scale application of carbon fiber composite materials, Ye Fuheng stated that this will begin with a disruptive development and innovation of the entire industry chain linkage, and requires the entire industry to collaborate and solve common technical problems, further constructing a low-cost development path. At the same time, it is also necessary to focus on the transformation and upgrading of new energy vehicles, achieve dual synergy of low cost and high value through integrated and functional development, and create high-value scenarios that are not just "light".

Ye Fuheng also mentioned that advanced mass production manufacturing technology will contribute to the large-scale application of carbon fiber composite materials. The mixed use of continuous and discontinuous fibers can further expand the application range of carbon fiber composites and achieve the composite of irregular solid components. In addition, data shows that recycled carbon fibers still have good mechanical properties and utilization value, which can not only be used in relatively low demand application scenarios, but also reduce energy consumption, which will further improve the industrial chain.

In addition, Zhao Liang, Technical Director of Beijing Ketek Technology Co., Ltd., also mentioned that the onboard hydrogen storage cylinder is a new application scenario worth exploring for carbon fiber composite materials.
