Global filtration membrane market continues to grow

2023/8/24

Recently, the Special Chemicals Update Program (SCUP) of S&P Global Commodity Insight released the "Water Management Chemicals Report". The report shows that whether it is removing impurities from freshwater, cleaning wastewater, or producing drinking water from seawater desalination, osmotic membrane filtration has become a core technology in water treatment around the world. In the past few decades, membrane filtration technology has achieved significant technological advancements and brought about significant performance and cost improvements. Nowadays, against the backdrop of global water scarcity and stricter regulations related to water resources, the global filtration membrane market will continue to grow.

The report points out that in the past 20 years, the membrane market has developed from small-scale niche applications to important industrial market categories. According to the data cited in the report, the water filtration membrane market accounted for approximately 30% of the $17 billion special water treatment chemicals market in 2022. The special water treatment chemicals market in the report mainly includes filtration membranes, ion exchange resins, organic polymers, corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors, special fungicides, and antifoams. According to the report, it is expected that global filtration membrane consumption will grow at an average annual rate of 6.2% from 2023 to 2028, far faster than the growth rate of demand for other water management chemicals.

S&P Global believes that the water management chemicals market is mainly driven by two global factors. One is the shortage of water resources, which is becoming increasingly scarce in many countries due to climate change and population growth; The second reason is that regulations on the quality of drinking water and wastewater are constantly strengthening around the world, limiting freshwater consumption, and increasing demand for safe and innovative water purification technologies from water companies. Some major water service companies in Europe and North America have shifted their strategy from quantity growth to value growth, providing innovative integrated water treatment solutions for chemical supply and digital services.

Water scarcity requires global access to new types of water resources. In the Middle East, which is severely lacking in freshwater, desalination and brackish water have become the main sources of drinking water. Most countries in the region have formulated ambitious national strategies to improve their water supply, especially Saudi Arabia, which is in a leading position. In addition to building more desalination facilities, Middle Eastern countries are also expanding investment in wastewater recovery. In Israel, over 90% of wastewater has been cleaned and reused, mainly for irrigation. Many other countries around the world have also been developing and promoting seawater desalination, including the United States and China, as well as many Mediterranean and South American countries. Based on this, market participants predict that the demand for reverse osmosis membranes around the world will continue to grow rapidly in the next 10 years. Reverse osmosis technology is cheaper and more sustainable than traditional thermal desalination processes, especially when connected to clean energy investment projects such as photovoltaic power generation, with good sustainable prospects.

At the same time, all major industrial countries have made water pollution a major unresolved issue, and regulatory regulations are becoming increasingly strict. Due to stricter wastewater legislation adopted by many countries and the continuous development of urbanization, the production capacity of sewage treatment plants around the world is also continuing to grow, and the demand for related membrane materials is also rapidly increasing. S&P Global expects that similar changes will also drive strong global consumption growth of organic polymer coagulants and flocculants such as polyacrylamide, which is the most important chemical for wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering in sewage treatment plants. In addition, membrane bioreactors are widely used in sewage treatment, usually using microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes to improve the efficiency and production capacity of sewage treatment plants, which can save water faster and improve the utilization rate of renewable resources.

Currently, global drinking water legislation is also constantly evolving. In North America and Europe, some governments are now aiming to eliminate persistent pollutants such as microplastics, perfluoroalkyl, and perfluoroalkyl substances. The US Environmental Protection Agency and the European Chemical Administration have recently introduced strict regulations. In addition to possible chemical bans, future legislation may also require the complete removal of these pollutants from drinking water. S&P Global believes that these will drive the consumption growth of water ultrafiltration membranes, nanofiltration membranes, and ion exchange resins, first in North America and Europe, and ultimately to all other regions of the world.
