Supply crisis still exists, German energy agency calls for gas conservation

2023/8/15

Although gas storage facilities are almost full, Germany's Federal Network Agency sees a "residual risk" of energy supplies in the coming winter and wants the government to call again for savings.

Deutsche News Agency reported that although there are other stable sources of supply after the Russian gas outage, "it is too early to completely disarm the alarm." Bruck Daily said. "Residual risks remain." That includes a very cold winter in Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin may also shut down gas spigots in southeastern Europe. Also, the attack on the pipeline is a horrific scenario.

According to reports, Germany's natural gas storage facilities are currently about 90% full, and the filling volume is significantly higher than last summer. In addition, industry and households have reduced consumption, and less gas has been sent to other countries, Mueller said. Still, he will "renew his call for conservation and prudent use of natural gas as the heating season approaches".

Economist Veronika Grimm also warned that gas supplies were likely to become tight again, despite the LPG terminals being built in the meantime. "There are still countries in Europe that buy Russian gas, and if the supply is cut off, we will have to help urgently," the economist told the Funke media group newspaper. "What was true last winter will hold true this winter. One can imagine it draining easily again." Ideally, one would be able to "increase sensitivity in a similar way to last year - and then heat more sparingly".

Meanwhile, German gas storage operators expect filling levels this year to exceed legal limits. According to regulations, storage tanks must be 95% full by November 1. The report pointed out that gas storage facilities can compensate for fluctuations in consumption, thereby forming a buffer system for the market. Fill levels typically decrease during winter and increase again after the heating period ends. According to earlier information from the German government, in an emergency, a fully-filled gas storage facility can cover Germany's winter consumption for an average of two to three months, even if no additional gas is purchased or produced during this period.
