With the continuous expansion of the new energy market, the competition in the field of power batteries is becoming increasingly fierce. In some non-mainstream battery tracks, such as the field of large cylindrical batteries, many manufacturers have been involved in production, hoping to enter the market through this new battery technology.
Yu Xiaoming, senior investment advisor of Jufeng Investment Consulting, said that at present, the mass production scale of large cylindrical batteries has not yet reached the optimum level of economy, so further technical improvement is still needed. With the advancement of technology and the increase of market demand, it is expected that the industrialization process of large cylindrical batteries will accelerate and the economy will gradually improve.
Many companies stepped up their layout
The large cylindrical battery has the advantages of high energy density, high safety, and long life, and is one of the priority solutions for both performance and economy at the current technological level. Guosen Securities believes that large cylindrical batteries use high-performance materials such as high-nickel positive electrodes and silicon negative electrodes to promote the development of battery performance in the direction of high energy density and strong fast charging.
Since Tesla released the 4680 large cylindrical battery in September 2020, many domestic battery factories including Ningde Times, Yiwei Lithium Energy, Envision Power, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, etc. have set foot in it.
According to industry insiders, unlike prismatic batteries, the current market for large cylindrical batteries has not yet formed a "one-dominant" situation, but there are already many manufacturers competing to deploy. Recently, many manufacturers such as Jinyang Co., Ltd., Azure Lithium Cell, and Hanchuan Intelligent announced that they are stepping up the development and production of large cylindrical battery products.
Jinyang shares stated on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange's interactive platform on July 18 that the company is the leader in the subdivision of precision structural parts for cylindrical lithium batteries in China. It has carried out research and development in the field of precision structural parts for large cylindrical lithium batteries earlier, and is currently developing customers. The number is about 20, and the company is also carrying out relevant production capacity construction.
Hanchuan Intelligent publicly stated that the large cylindrical battery production line has completed the research and development of the prototype line and will be unveiled in the second half of this year.
The "big can factory" Slack also joined in, taking advantage of the technological advantages of metal processing and forming to cut into the track. "The company has considerable technical accumulation and can produce more than 4,000 cans per minute. Through this process technology cross-border battery field, the company is currently able to produce 200 4680 large cylindrical battery cases per minute." The representative of Slack Securities said, " At present, the conditions for mass production have not yet been reached, and it is only a small-scale trial production stage."
BYD is also trying to produce large cylindrical batteries in small batches. Recently, it is openly recruiting for large cylindrical battery-related equipment bidding, which is mainly used for battery cell baking before liquid injection of large cylindrical batteries.
The Huaan Securities Research Report believes that BYD's entry will promote the industrialization of large cylindrical batteries.
"At present, many battery companies are actively exploring and deploying 4680 large cylindrical batteries." The above-mentioned industry insiders said that considering the higher energy density and cost advantages of 4680 large cylindrical batteries, manufacturers hope to improve battery life and competitiveness. , and meet consumer demand for high-performance power batteries.
Opportunities and challenges coexist
From the perspective of application prospects, Guosen Securities predicts that the global market demand for large cylindrical batteries will be 23GWh in 2023, of which energy storage/power will be 0.3/22.4GWh respectively; in 2026, the global demand for large cylindrical batteries is expected to reach 238GWh, and in 2023 -The average annual compound growth rate in 2026 will be 119%, and the global large cylindrical battery production capacity is expected to reach 400GWh in 2026.
However, the production of large cylindrical batteries is not an easy task, and there are many difficulties in manufacturing 4680 large cylindrical batteries.
Liu Qi, a special researcher and doctoral supervisor at the School of Materials, Beijing Institute of Technology, told reporters: "The layout of the large cylindrical battery production line needs to be modified and upgraded accordingly, and the one-time investment is large. In addition, its technical process needs to ensure the consistency of battery product performance. It needs to go through a lot of technical process parameter adjustments.”
From an economic point of view, Liu Qi said: "The mass production of large cylindrical batteries needs to be simultaneously increased to match high-capacity layered cathode materials and silicon-carbon anode materials, so as to greatly increase the energy density of power batteries and further increase the cruising range of electric vehicles. In order to ensure its competitive advantage and achieve economic efficiency."
For second- and third-tier battery manufacturers, this is an opportunity to catch up with leading companies. Yu Xiaoming believes that due to the relatively high technical threshold of large cylindrical batteries, some leading battery manufacturers may face the problem of high transformation costs, while second- and third-tier battery manufacturers are expected to pass the market in large cylindrical batteries by increasing technology and R&D investment.
