China is an important contributor to global green and low-carbon technology innovation

Ge Shu, director of the Strategic Planning Department of the State Intellectual Property Office, revealed on July 18 that the latest statistics show that China is an important contributor to global green and low-carbon technology innovation. From 2016 to 2022, the total number of global green and low-carbon technology invention patent authorizations reached 558,000, of which 178,000 were granted to Chinese patentees, accounting for 31.9%. The average annual growth rate reached 12.5%, which was significantly higher than the overall global level of 2.5%.

On the same day, the State Council Information Office held a press conference on intellectual property work in Beijing in the first half of 2023. Ge Shu made the above remarks when answering questions from the media about "the recent Chinese invention team won the 2023 European Inventor Award 'Non-European Patent Office Member State Award'".

He said that the State Intellectual Property Office has also paid attention to the award-winning information of Chinese companies, which also reflects from one aspect that China's green and low-carbon technology innovations are making positive contributions to global green development.

At present, China's green and low-carbon industry is developing rapidly, and green and low-carbon technology innovation is the basis and key to realize the goal of "double carbon" (carbon peak and carbon neutrality). The State Intellectual Property Office attaches great importance to the promotion of green and low-carbon technology innovation. According to the deployment of the "14th Five-Year Plan for National Intellectual Property Protection and Utilization", it focuses on strengthening the statistics and monitoring of green intellectual property rights, and compiles and releases the "Green Low-Carbon Technology Patent Classification System" and relevant patent statistical analysis reports.

Ge Shu pointed out that according to the latest statistical data on the number of patents granted for green and low-carbon technology inventions in the world from 2016 to 2022, from the perspective of innovation entities, there are 13 Chinese companies or units that have entered the top 50 in the number of patents granted for green and low-carbon technology inventions in the world, second only to Japan's 15 companies. Among the 13, there are 8 enterprises and 5 scientific research institutes, including both large state-owned enterprises and private enterprises.

Judging from the innovative and active energy storage technologies in recent years, the number of invention patents authorized in the field of electrochemical energy storage in China has increased from 4,300 in 2016 to 13,000 in 2022, with an average annual growth rate of 19.9%, and its share in the global total has increased from 35.5% to 44.9%. The award-winning patent is an important innovation in the field of energy storage technology.

Ge Shu said that in the next step, the State Intellectual Property Office will continue to improve the green patent classification system, continuously strengthen the statistical analysis of green patents, actively promote the transformation and application of green technology patents, and better serve green development.
