Polycarbonate supply and demand contradiction is outstanding, experts suggest: to homogenize and differentiate the development of both hands

   In the context of a sharp increase in production capacity, China's polycarbonate industry chain, the contradiction between supply and demand mismatch is particularly prominent, the enterprise start-up rate continues to hover low, the polycarbonate industry is bound to face the reshaping of the development pattern. Enterprises should take the development of de-homogenization and differentiation as a grasp, and actively respond to the challenge. This is the information obtained at the China Polycarbonate Industry Development Summit and the second session of the Council held on June 15.

  According to China Synthetic Resin Association Polycarbonate Branch, from 2019, domestic polycarbonate production capacity has surged, with an average annual growth rate of 24.7%. Up to now, China's polycarbonate production capacity has reached 3.43 million tons/year, the world's largest polycarbonate production area. However, from 2019 to date, extra-territorial new polycarbonate capacity is rarely heard of. It is expected that in 2023, the excess domestic polycarbonate capacity will be 630,000 tons, plus net imports of polycarbonate are estimated at about 750,000 tons, so the actual excess domestic polycarbonate capacity may reach 1.38 million tons this year, accounting for 81% of the global excess capacity.

  "In recent years, with the surge in production capacity, polycarbonate companies have experienced a change in focus from new capacity, to integration, to how to digest the stock." Rongsheng Petrochemical Sales Division Manager Zhu Qunwei said that the homogenization of domestic products is one of the reasons for overcapacity. Therefore, polycarbonate companies should orderly allocate product grades to achieve staggered competition, so that the industry is balanced pressure in various application areas. For the existing stock of polycarbonate, enterprises can increase export efforts and other measures to alleviate. Zhu Qunwei also mentioned that enterprises should strive to improve product quality and find new hot spots for industrial development.

  For polycarbonate enterprises how to find new development opportunities in the situation of mismatch between supply and demand, the participants all said that they should actively explore the downstream application scenarios of the industry chain to achieve differentiated development. Including but not limited to medical health, new energy vehicles, green power storage, mobile energy storage and other fields. Wang Guojun, technical service manager of Wanhua Chemical, mentioned that optical application will be one of the important high-end application areas of polycarbonate, with high cleanliness, high light transmission and other special features of optical-grade polycarbonate, can be widely used in the field of headlight mask, headlight light guide, optical lens, optical lens and so on.

  At the same time, many industry chain downstream enterprises expressed the demand for polycarbonate.

  Duan Qingsheng, general manager of Xiamen Shidi Medical Technology Co., Ltd. mentioned that medical plastic is a material subject to less market boom, and polycarbonate has the advantages of high transparency and high impact resistance, which can precisely meet the requirements of medical plastic products such as high-pressure syringes and surgical masks. In the future, the demand for polycarbonate in the medical health industry will further increase.

  Zhu Yi, director of the Materials and Lightweight Research Institute of FAW R&D General Institute of China, and Meng Tao, solution manager of Kumho Nikkei Automotive Industry, both mentioned that polycarbonate will be more and more widely used in the automotive industry; Zhu Yun, R&D project director of Lenovo Group, talked about the increasing demand for polycarbonate materials in the notebook industry.

  Polycarbonate circular economy working group was established

  On June 15, China Synthetic Resin Association's Polycarbonate Circular Economy Working Group was established in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, and launched the industry's green development declaration.

  The meeting pointed out that climate change is a serious challenge faced by mankind, and green low-carbon sustainable development advocates the recycling of resources in production, distribution, consumption and recycling to address climate change. Plastic recycling is an important practice of green low-carbon sustainable development. In response to the national "double carbon" goal, China Synthetic Resin Association Polycarbonate Branch launched the industry's green development declaration, including reducing the industry's use of primary fossil resources, promoting enterprises to adopt the ecological design concept of circular economy from the source, and actively promote the recycling and reuse of polycarbonate; guide the industry to climb the peak of science and technology. Actively carry out the innovation of green recycling technology of polycarbonate materials to improve the recycling rate, standardize recycling management and traceability, and enhance the quality of recycled polycarbonate; actively build the industry's green low-carbon recycling industry chain, strengthen the promotion and publicity of the use of recycled plastics, establish and improve the relevant green industrial policy system, and promote the establishment of relevant industry standards.
