The Fujian Provincial Government's website announced that on May 24th, a signing ceremony for the technical contract of the world's largest annual production of 900,000 tons of BDO project was held in Fuzhou. The project is a collaboration between China Jing Chemical and the UK's Johnson Matthey, focusing on hydrogen utilization and the introduction of the carbon-four industry chain.
China Jing Chemical is the world's largest producer of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film. With an investment of 28 billion yuan, it has established a complete carbon-three industry chain, including a liquid chemical terminal, a low-temperature storage tank area, propane, propylene, polypropylene, and polypropylene film production. In 2022, the company entered the list of China's top 500 enterprises.
The carbon-four new materials industrial chain project utilizes the hydrogen gas produced from propane dehydrogenation to produce chemical new material BDO (1,4-butanediol). BDO can be used in the production of lithium batteries, high-end fabrics such as spandex, and fully biodegradable plastics. The total investment in the project is 18 billion yuan, with an annual output value exceeding 60 billion yuan. It will be constructed in three phases, and the plan is to complete all phases within three years.
Currently, China Jing Chemical produces 135,000 tons of hydrogen gas annually during the propane dehydrogenation process. Most of it is used as fuel, but its value as an industrial raw material can be more than doubled. By constructing the carbon-four industry chain, the company will utilize the hydrogen gas generated by the carbon-three industry chain through the hydrogenation of phthalic anhydride. Additionally, the large amount of heat generated by the oxidation of butane to produce phthalic anhydride will be used to generate high-pressure steam for the carbon-three industry chain. This effectively solves the issues of hydrogen and steam supply, as well as the utilization of reaction heat, by leveraging the advantages of coupling the processes.
It is worth noting that the BDO production process using phthalic anhydride technology is based on advanced process technology developed by Johnson Matthey.
