Recently, Sinopec successfully applied its independently developed BSQ-2 catalyst, which is characterized by ultra-high hydrogen sensitivity, high stereoselectivity, and no plasticizer, in a 200,000-ton multi-zone gas-phase polypropylene plant at the China National Offshore Oil Corporation. The catalyst has achieved stable operation.
The BSQ-2 catalyst, which has now been industrially applied, is an improved and high-performance catalyst developed by the research team of the Polypropylene Institute at Sinopec after the successful industrial application of the BSQ-1 catalyst. The activity of the BSQ-2 catalyst is twice that of the originally used imported catalyst, exhibiting higher hydrogen sensitivity and reducing hydrogen consumption by half. During the trial of the catalyst, the operation of the multi-zone reactor was stable, and the discharge was smooth, contributing to the localization of the catalyst for multi-zone cyclic reaction processes and the development of high-performance polypropylene grades.
Since 2021, Sinopec Beijing Research Institute, CNOOC Petrochemicals, and a catalyst company have formed a joint research team to address the problem of poor discharge or blockage in the production of impact-resistant copolymers using imported catalysts in polypropylene plants. They developed the BSQ-1 catalyst to facilitate the development and production of high-end grades in the plant.
In 2022, the research team conducted two trials of domestically produced catalysts while ensuring stable production. From February this year, the team held a conference on the development of polyolefin new products and the localization of catalysts, initiating the final breakthrough in the localization of the process catalyst. On March 9th, the industrial application of the BSQ-1 catalyst was successfully completed, marking the first use of domestically produced catalysts in the plant.
Xia Xianzhi, a senior expert at Sinopec, stated that the current demand for domestic mid-to-low-end polyolefin products has decreased, while the demand for high-value-added grade development in plants continues to increase. Therefore, it is necessary to further develop new catalysts with better performance to meet the requirements of high-value-added product development in the plant.
The research team organized researchers to visit the production line of the CNOOC Petrochemical plant, understand the characteristics of the process plant, and communicate with the technical and production staff of CNOOC Petrochemical. They optimized the production plan and further developed the new BSQ-2 catalyst with ultra-high hydrogen sensitivity, high stereoselectivity, and no plasticizer.
During the industrial trial of the BSQ-2 catalyst, the technical staff closely monitored various reaction parameters and paid attention to product analysis. Based on previous laboratory data and operational experience, they adjusted the feed rates of activators, external electron donors, hydrogen, and catalyst materials in a timely manner to ensure the stable operation of the plant. They successfully produced two resin products, EP440N and EP548R, with all the performance indicators meeting the standards.
